Discounts offered for groups to hire space at KMCC
THE Surf Coast Shire will offer discounted room hire fees for groups using the new Kurrambee Myaring Community Centre (KMCC) for its first two-and-a-half years.
KMCC is on track to open in February, and councillors resolved at their November meeting to adopt room hire fees based on the Torquay Children’s Hub.
Groups using the community centre will be eligible for a discounted hire fee of 40 per cent between February 2018 and June 2019, and a 20 per cent discount between July 2019 and June 2020.
The community centre – located at 12 Merrijig Drive, Torquay – will feature kindergartens (3 and 4 years old), occasional care (6 months to 5 years) and council-managed services such as Maternal Child Health, Positive Ageing, immunisation information and clinics, and a youth space.
It will also have three consulting rooms, three multi-purpose rooms and a fully equipped kitchen for community members to use.
“We held an information session for potential users of Kurrambee Myaring Community Centre in August and heard from some groups that the proposed fees were higher than they expected,” Cr Rose Hodge said.
“We hope that offering a discount from the centre’s start of operation in February 2018 to June 2020 will encourage more providers to access the centre and take advantage of its state-of-the-art facilities on a regular or casual basis.
“Ultimately, this centre is going to be a space that caters for all people.
“It has a fully accessible toilet and shower change facility with a hoist, supporting our goal for an inclusive community where everyone can participate.”
The centre’s hire fees for future financial years will be set through the shire’s annual budget process.
Kurrambee Myaring is an Aboriginal name meaning “Merry-laugh, here in this place”.
