Don’t let burn-offs escape this fire season

AS VICTORIA approaches the Fire Danger Period (FDP), the community is being urged to take extra precautions when burning-off.

The CFA responded to 819 callouts for escaped burn-offs last year, the concerning trend appears to be ongoing in 2024 with crews already responding to 37 incidents between September 1 and September 20.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said this number was far too high and the CFA was aiming for a significant reduction in escaped burn-offs this season.

“Last year’s numbers, especially during Spring, placed an unnecessary strain on CFA crews, neighbouring properties, and the community.

“Letting a burn-off escape during the FDP can result in severe penalties, including heavy fines and liability for damages caused.”

Fines of up to $23,710 can be issued for allowing a burn-off to escape during a FDP period, along with 12 months imprisonment, the penalty is doubled on days of Total Fire Ban.

Residents are reminded to register burn-offs using the Fire Permits Victoria Website to avoid un-necessary callouts from local fire brigades.

As the FDP approaches, Victorians are also encouraged to prepare their properties by completing simple tasks including clearing gutters, pruning overhanging branches, maintaining grass and moving wood piles away from houses.

Mr Heffernan said by completing these tasks, residents increase the chances of their property withstanding a bushfire.

“An earlier start to the fire season means community members need to start preparations now,” he said.

“By removing light and heavy fuels around your home, you’re protecting your property and helping firefighters defend it.”

Households should also ensure they have a Bushfire Survival Plan and know what to do in case of an emergency.

The AFAC seasonal outlook for Spring has predicted an increased risk of fire for Victoria’s south-west.
