Dough for no dough: Torquay Salvos resumes weekly bread run
TORQUAY Salvation Army has resumed one of its favourite traditions on the back of a two-year absence due to COVID-19.
The Torquay Salvos’ weekly bread run is back and Torquay/Jan Juc residents are in prime position to save money on doughy goods ranging from crisp baguettes to Boston buns.
Torquay Salvation Army officer Christine Ellis said the weekly bread run was a key aspect of the branch before the pandemic began, but now she is trying to get spread word amongst her community about a deal that almost sounds too good to be true.
“Throughout the pandemic it just became too hard to get this bread out to the community, so we were giving whatever bread we had to farmers for their livestock,” Ms Ellis said.
“But more recently, with the cost of living rising and so many people under a heap of financial pressure, I just think that this bread should be going back out to people instead.”
Ms Ellis is encouraging everyone to come along to the weekly pickup, with bread to be given away each Sunday by the bag load, between 6.30pm and 7.00pm at the branch’s building on 35 Boston Road.
“All people are invited to come and take what they need, no questions asked,” Ms Ellis added.
“You’re more than welcome to come and take bread for yourselves, or even for a friend, if it means you’re able to save some money that week.”
Torquay’s Salvation Army places serving the community at the top of its priority list according to Ms Ellis, having served the community of Torquay since the First World War.
“For us here in Torquay we just want to serve the community we are in, as should all Salvos branches,” Ms Ellis said.
“Initiatives like our weekly bread run are just what we do, we are fortunate enough to have this bread and we just want people to have it.
“We don’t care who they or where they come from, we just hope it meets a need for people in the region.”
If any residents have questions, they are welcome to ring the branch on 4241 3100.
