Grab a drive-through sausage this Saturday

November 5, 2020 BY

The Rotary Club of Torquay’s barbecue trailer is usually a familiar sight on the Torquay foreshore.

THE Rotary Club of Torquay’s distinctive barbecue trailer is back on the Torquay foreshore this Saturday (November 7) – but for one day only and with a difference.

The club has been granted permission by the Surf Coast Shire council to hold its first public fundraiser barbecue since COVID-19 restrictions were introduced.

The restrictions have stalled all of the club’s usual avenues for fundraising. There have been no barbecues outside Bunnings and no Cowrie Markets, and the annual Book Fair and Motor Show events have an uncertain future.

It has been more than six months since anyone could buy a barbecue snag from a community barbecue in Torquay, and the Rotary Club have been negotiating for weeks with the Surf Coast Shire to be permitted to run such a fundraiser.

Last month, the council granted a permit for a unique “drive-through” barbecue, with part of the foreshore reserve to be opened up for the day.

The shire has approved a physical and COVID-Safe plan to ensure the safety of patrons and Rotary volunteers at the site.

Patrons will be able to safely drive through and place their order and collect without leaving the comfort of their car. There will also be a walk-up counter service for pedestrians.

All funds raised will be allocated to Rotary projects.

“Please show your support and grab a snag to help us to help others less fortunate than ourselves,” Torquay Rotary’s Greg Plumridge said.

As usual, Rotary will be providing locally produced gluten-free sausages, and will also have a range of drinks available.

Mr Plumridge said Saturday’s event would be a one-off, but he was hopeful the council would approve more dates to allow more barbecues to be held before the end of the year.

The drive-through barbecue will be held at the grassed reserve on The Esplanade opposite Darian Road on Saturday, November 7 from 8am-4pm.
