THE Rotary Club of Torquay hosted a drive-through with a difference on Saturday, inviting motorists and pedestrians to roll through and grab a sausage from their barbecue trailer.

The club set up and ran the fundraising event on the Torquay foreshore near the corner of Darian Road and The Esplanade.

It had been more than six months since anyone had bought a snag from a community barbecue in Torquay, but the Rotary Club of Torquay negotiated permission for the one-off “Drive-Through Barbecue” from the Surf Coast Shire and the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee and are hopeful more such events can be held in the near future.

Traffic flow was constant through the site, and more than 40kg of sausages were sold in eight hours.

“What a great day! Thank you to all the people who came and purchased a sausage, drink – or both – and those who gave us donations at our Drive Through Barbecue,” organiser Greg Plumridge said.

“The funds we raised today will help the Rotary Club of Torquay help those in need locally and internationally.

“The support we were given from GORCC in allowing us to hold the event and setting up the site, the Surf Coast Times with promotion in the newspaper, Kennards for providing the message sign and of course all of our members for manning the barbecue all contributed the success on the day – and what a day it was.

“The interest, comments and feedback on social media demonstrated the level of support that we received at the barbecue, even the pic posted by Sam McGowan of one of the kids tucking into a snag in the back of the car.

“Thank you all so much for your support particularly Michael Reed for persevering with the shire and GORCC to get approval for the event, and Mal Slater for mustering the crew and the resources.”
