A JOINT workshop between two councils has used first-hand experiences to help shape and refine emergency planning in the event of a disaster for disability services and their patients.

Surf Coast Shire and Colac Otway Shire provided a workshop last month, shaping disability inclusive regional emergency planning procedures that will leave no residents behind.

Surf Coast Shire deputy mayor Mike Bodsworth said the June 23 workshop at Grant Pavilion provided a better understanding of those most vulnerable when facing an emergency situation.

“We thank and commend everyone who contributed to this forum, especially those with first-hand experiences of the particular challenges people with disability and their carers can face in times of emergency,” Cr Bodsworth said.

“This has helped mobilise a process with such high purpose, building a structure and better understanding around caring for our most vulnerable in times of crisis.

“One of the most important outcomes from the workshop was the local networking.”

The Surf Coast Shire partnered with the Colac Otway Shire to provide the workshop.

The workshop was hosted by Country Fire Authority (CFA) representatives.

Just over 30 people attended the workshop from the CFA, Red Cross, disability providers, advocacy groups and council emergency management and disability inclusion staff.

Professor Michelle Villeneuve of Sydney University’s Centre for Disability Research and Policy led the forum discussion.

She broadened attendees’ understanding of existing planning and resources and explored potential development of community disability disaster risk policies and practices.

Emergency Management Victoria funded the workshop as part of its Clearing the Path to Disability Inclusive Fire and Emergency Planning project.

The workshop is being rolled out in five Victorian municipalities.

“We look forward to sharing the University of Sydney insights from the workshop with all participants, emergency services and service providers, and continuing the conversation during coming months,” Cr Bodsworth said.

Surf Coast and Colac Otway Shire residents can also register with the free CFA Emergency Planning Advice Service during 2023.

Residents can phone Council on 5261 0600 to learn more about the service.
