Esplanade to be enhanced under tree planting project
THE Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) began work on a substantial revegetation project along the Torquay Foreshore, planting trees and replacing aged and unsafe trees between Bell Street and Zeally Bay Road.
GORCAPA began the tree replacement and planting project on Wednesday which aims to enhance the natural beachfront environment.
According to GORCAPA, the 2500 new trees and plants will provide shade, wind shelter and improve amenity, while supporting local businesses by activating outdoor spaces close to shops, restaurants and cafes.
The foreshore change will also benefit native wildlife by increasing habitat, with most species of trees being planted being endemic to the area including a mix of grasses, groundcovers, shrubs and feature trees to enhance both amenity and biodiversity.
“The Esplanade is at the heart of what makes Torquay such a popular location to live and visit, and this project will provide an even more relaxing and enjoyable experience,” Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority CEO, Jodie Sizer said.
“Increased habitat will also benefit the environment, and we look forward to expanding this work along the Torquay coastline in coming years.”
The project has been carefully designed to ensure minimal impact on The Esplanade’s Ocean views by only planting trees between property borders and at the end of T-intersections.
GORCAPA has consulted and worked with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners on the project, while also seeking feedback and communicating with neighbouring residents and businesses.
The program, which is part of GORCAPA’s Draft Point Impossible to Jan Juc Masterplan 2020-25, is funded by Surf Coast Shire Council, and received a Victorian government COVIDSafe Outdoor Activation Fund 2021 grant.
