ETHAN Ewing has won it and will ring it, taking victory in the men’s final at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach today (Tuesday, April 11).

The 24-year-old Queenslander dominated the final against compatriot Ryan Callinan, choosing the right waves and making the most of them.

Riding small waves in crosswind conditions at Winkipop, Ewing started the final in better form with a  5.33 on his first wave, while it took Callinan until his fifth wave to crack a score above 4.00

Ewing only got better as the final went on, knocking out consecutive rides of 6.67 and 6.83

Callinan landed a 5.73 towards the end of the final and was chasing a score of at least 8.77 on his final wave, but could only manage 5.27.

“Far out, it’s crazy, it’s been a crazy weekend. So, so good,” Ewing said after his win.

Ewing’s victory elevates him to fourth in the standings and into contention for the championship, and follows that of his mother, Helen Lambert, who rang the Bell in 1983.

“It’s [winning at Bells] been a huge goal of mine, and I wanted to do her proud,” he said.

Today was first time since 1991 there had been an all-Australian final in both the men’s and women’s finals at Bells, when Barton Lynch defeated Damien Hardman and Pauline Menczer won over Michele Donoghoe.

Ewing’s path to the Bell:

  • Defeated Owen Wright in the Round of 32
  • Defeated Gabriel Medina in the Round of 16
  • Defeated Matthew McGillivray in the Quarter-Final
  • Defeated Filipe Toledo in the Semi-Final
  • Defeated Ryan Callinan in the Final

The women’s final in the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach is under way now. More to come.
