Fairhaven run produces another classic
NEARLY 700 people ran for a good cause on Fairhaven beach earlier this month in the eighth staging of the Tim Gates Classic.
The annual event organised by the Fairhaven SLSC is a five-kilometre walk or run and a 10-kilometre run from the clubhouse, along the beach and back.
In the 5km run/walk, which had 615 competitors, Will Lewis was the first runner back in a time of 16:30, followed by Heath Mitchell and Barry Carey.
The fastest female was Samantha Gates with a time of 20:52, followed by Mia Kemp and Lilly Taylor.
In the 10km run, which had 87 competitors, Michael Kernahan was the first runner back in a time of 32:41, followed by Andre La Gerche and Andrew Monk. Johanna Waller was the first of the female runners with a time of 41:01, followed by Mikhalia Harris and Christine Hopkins.
The community event raises funds for the Tim Gates Foundation, which was established in memory of Fairhaven SLSC member Tim Gates.
“Gatesy” touched the lives of many people through his dedication to surf lifesaving and the Club. In 2008, Gates died in a surfing accident at Fairhaven beach.
