FAIRHAVEN Surf Life Saving Club (FSLSC) is getting right behind Movember with a numbers of its members playing their part to support the cause.

Male and female members of the club have been supporting the cause, which is well-documented on the club’s Facebook page, and are doing great work campaigning to raise money and awareness.

FSLSC member Mark Scotland is the driving force behind the club’s involvement.

Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club member Mark Scotland is one of a number of members getting behind this year’s Movember.

Scotland said it was the first time he had taken part in Movember, and that he had been inspired to be part of the initiative after experiencing a difficult year.

After losing his job in March due to the impact of coronavirus, Scotland returned to Torquay, where he has lived on and off for the best part of a decade. The immediacy of the decision and the uncertainty surrounding his future was challenging for Scotland.

“I wanted to do something before the start of the (summer) season after such a challenging year, just to get people’s spirits up and do something good for a great organisation,” Scotland said.

“I’ve had some big challenges throughout this year.

“That sudden change really rocked me, I just wanted to focus on that mental health aspect of it and make sure people do feel comfortable speaking up if they’re not feeling great.”

Paul Shannon, Jacqui Dreher, Alex Wright, Sarah Burt, Tom Burt and Mark Scotland are all participating in Movember, representing FSLSC within the Life Saving Victoria team.

FSLSC is hoping to hold a virtual event to further support the cause, the club is still working through the best way to go about it during these COVID-19 restricted times.

The club has implemented its COVIDSafe plan and is looking forward to running the usual operations over summer and providing its young members with training and assessments, it will just be done in smaller groups to ensure protocols are followed.

Anyone wishing to donate to the cause can do so at https://au.movember.com/team/2372707.
