THE Surf Coast Shire is encouraging eligible farmers to apply for Victorian Government grants in a bid to strengthen drought preparedness and mitigate bushfire exposure.

The On-Farm Drought Infrastructure Grants Program is offering grants of up to $5,000, while eligible businesses are also able to obtain dollar-for-dollar matching funding.

“Eligible farmers can apply for grants for on-farm improvements including water infrastructure upgrades, stock containment areas, grain and fodder storage and drought management tools such as soil moisture monitors and weather stations,” the Shire said in a statement.

The grant pool forms part of the Victorian Government’s $13.53 million Drought Support Package, which includes $12.1 million for grants.

The program will close once all funds are allocated.

Agriculture Victoria is also providing additional dry season and drought support information and services for farmers.

Farmers can head to agriculture.vic.gov.au/dryseasons for more information.

Local farmers can contact Rural Financial Counselling Services Victoria West on 1300 735 578 for a range of support services including developing strategies to cope with stress, setting up a support network and accessing health services through referrals.
