SURF Coast residents and visitors are invited to provide feedback on a new draft of the Domestic Animal Management Plan.

The plan outlines how people, dogs and cats can live harmoniously in the Surf Coast Shire.

Its theme of ‘Take the Lead’ is a call for the council, residents and visitors to play their role in fostering friendly relationships.

There are currently more than 5500 dogs and 700 cats registered in the region.

Councillor Adrian Schonfelder thanked the more than 450 people who participated in an initial survey about pet ownership.

“The survey told us that dog-related issues continue to be the biggest concern, particularly dogs off leash and people not picking up the poo. Roaming cats was the top cat concern,” Cr Schonfelder said.

“The draft plan outlines a bigger focus on education, enforcement and using data to guide our services.

“We also need to help visitors from neighbouring municipalities and beyond to understand our rules.”

Feedback on the draft plan closes on October 16.
