Festive creativity lights up Shorts Place

LOCAL multimedia artist Matt Bonner has given his street-art projection on Shorts Place a festive makeover, creating a new illumination to add to the annual Christmas arts trail.

The corner of Lt Malop Street and Shorts Place will come to life each night between 9pm and 12am until Monday January 7 2019, with the animated lightshow inspired by an existing artwork from Melbourne artist Baby Guerrilla.

Baby Guerrilla’s original artwork depicts a couple sporting virtual reality goggles while holding a small child.

In true Bonner style, the artist has transformed this imagery, incorporating ideas of Christmas rituals by including a child writing cards and a family enjoying festive celebrations.

City of Greater Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood said the community is lucky to have so many talented people who bring colourful creativity to the region.

“Christmas is the perfect time for artists to express themselves and contribute to the Central Geelong Christmas trail,” he said.

“It’s a time for celebration, joy and spending time with friends and family. There’s no better place than Geelong to do this, with so much to see and do.

“The projections program is a real feature of the Christmas trail, and it’s great to see families out together enjoying and exploring our city at night.”
