FLAIM Systems recognised for revolutionising firefighting training

October 31, 2019 BY

THE 40th Governor of Victoria Export Awards (GOVEA) were held earlier in the month, with Waurn Ponds-based FLAIM Systems receiving the Small Business Award.

FLAIM Systems offers training for firefighters through virtual reality (VR).

Chief executive officer James Mullins said he was delighted for the business to receive the recognition.

“Our reputation for providing virtual reality and haptic training solutions that deliver a real experience is growing and so is our market presence around the world.

“We are proud to be revolutionising the way people across the globe are training firefighters and first responders – developed and manufactured in Victoria.”

FLAIM Systems are able to provide this training with the use of various pieces of technology. Participants are equipped in firefighting gear along with a HTC Vive virtual reality headset, a tracking instrument that imitates a high pressure hose in VR, including feedback to simulate water force, and a jacket with built-in heating units to imitate the heat increase when nearing a fire.

This means the trainee is immersed in a situation where they can see and feel the fire as well as the pressure from the hose.

FLAIM System’s provide a method of training firefighters that is not only completely safe but that can be delivered globally.

They have grown out of ManuFutures, Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds manufacturing and innovation hub, and now provide their training in places in 14 different countries.

The system is not only advanced in the immersive experience it enables, but also the data it provides.

Instructors are also able to monitor respiration and air usage, and effectiveness of firefighting operations, a world first in the industry.
