Flu-proof your winter

WINTER is here and so is flu season. In 2024, Australia recorded more than 340,000 flu cases, one of the worst seasons in years. With more than 50,000 cases already reported by April 2025, health officials are urging Australians to get protected early.

Cold vs. flu: What’s the difference?

They can seem similar, but there are key differences.

Colds are milder, come on gradually, and usually involve a stuffy nose, sore throat, and mild cough.

Rest and isolate to avoid spreading the flu.

Flu hits suddenly and hard – think fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, and a dry cough.

Flu can also cause serious complications like pneumonia, especially in vulnerable groups.

Top three ways to prevent the flu:

1. Get your flu shot

The best time to get it? April or May, before the peak flu season in June to September.

2. Practice good hygiene

Wash hands regularly with soap and water. Use hand sanitiser when out and about. Cover your mouth with your elbow when coughing or sneezing.

3. Stay home if you’re sick

If you feel unwell – especially with flu symptoms – rest and isolate to avoid spreading it to others. Early treatment can also reduce severity, especially for high-risk people.

Boost your immunity

Eat a balanced diet, get enough sleep, stay active, and manage stress. A strong immune system helps fight off infection.

If you are at risk of vitamin D deficiency, speak with your doctor to organise an appropriate blood test.
