Food Aid celebrates 25 years

March 27, 2019 BY

Food Aid executive committee John, Graeme and Lois and Surf Coast Shire mayor Rose Hodge celebrate 25 years of Food Aid assisting the community.

SURF Coast Shire mayor Rose Hodge joined in the 25th birthday celebrations for Torquay Food Aid ahead of their open day on March 20.

Cr Hodge said the organisation was a wonderful example of the kindness shown by Surf Coast residents.

“There are people that fall on a bit of a hard time and it’s wonderful that these volunteers put their time and effort into helping these people.

“It’s a fantastic enterprise and it shows how caring the volunteers are; a lot of them are retired and still want to put their time into people that are less fortunate than them. I think that’s a wonderful value to have in our community.”

Food Aid treasurer and chief buyer John Forbes said he has been at the buying reigns for the past two decades and enjoyed giving back to those in need.

“There are a lot of people around Torquay that need help and we’re able to help them out by giving them food each week, we help them with the necessities. “I’m the chief buyer and have been for the past 20 years. We spent $12,000 last year buying additional food for the program alone.”

The 90-minute open day gave the community an opportunity to learn more about the long-running charity.

Torquay Food Aid is located at the rear of Barwon Health, 100 Surf Coast Highway, Torquay (enter through the carport at the rear of the doctor’s carpark).
