SURF COAST farmers have a new tool to tackle farm plastic waste, with recycling for eligible agricultural bags now available in Winchelsea.

The free drop-off service is now operating at the Winchelsea Transfer Station, allowing farmers and agricultural businesses to recycle eligible single-use polypropylene bags commonly used for fertiliser, seed, stock feed and pet food.

The initiative is delivered through bagMUSTER, a national, industry-led not-for-profit program focused on reducing the environmental impact of agricultural plastics. All eligible bags collected through the program are recycled within Australia and repurposed into new products.

Surf Coast Shire councillor Tony Phelps said the introduction of the service gave farmers the opportunity to protect the environment, while continuing their usual farming practices.

“By bringing bagMUSTER to Winchelsea, we are making it easier for farmers and agricultural businesses to recycle responsibly and keep plastic out of the environment,” he said.

He said the program will provide an essential tool for local farmers.

“Single-use polypropylene bags are a necessary part of farming, but they don’t need to end up in landfill,” Cr Phelps said.

“This program is free for eligible bags, is practical and delivers real environment benefits.”

The program aligns with the shire’s recycling, waste reduction and sustainability commitments.

The bagMUSTER drop-off service is only available at the Winchelsea Transfer Station. Bags must be empty, clean and dry to be accepted for recycling, with any non-polypropylene components – including some labels and liners – removed. Fees will apply for disposal of non-eligible bags to landfill.
