Victoria’s biggest-ever free travel deal arrives this summer

All services will run fare-free from first to last on weekends. No myki tap is needed, and even reserved seats on V/Line services will be free.

Free weekend public transport is rolling out across all of Victoria this summer, giving regional and metropolitan travellers unlimited travel with no fares.

From early December until 1 February, every train, tram, bus and coach service operated by the state will be free on Saturdays and Sundays. That includes V/Line services both into Melbourne and between regional towns.

So whether you’re heading from Bendigo to the city for the cricket or from Geelong to Warrnambool for a beach weekend, your trip will cost nothing.

Premier Jacinta Allan said the initiative is a thank-you to Victorians for their patience during the long construction of the Metro Tunnel.

“We’re saying thank you Victoria – with free PT every weekend this summer,” she said.

“Everyone, everywhere, every weekend, free until Feb 1.”

All services will run fare-free from first to last on weekends. No myki tap is needed, and even reserved seats on V/Line services will be free.

Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams said the offer applies across the state, not just to Melbourne.

“Regional Victorians can enjoy free weekend travel to the city, but also between local towns,” she said.

“You can head to Melbourne for an event, or take a short trip to a nearby regional centre for a market or lunch with friends. It’s all free.”

With cost-of-living pressures still high, the savings are expected to be welcomed by families and weekend adventurers alike.

The free travel offer also aligns with key summer events including the Boxing Day Test, New Year’s Eve celebrations and the Australian Open, but it’s just as valuable for local catch-ups, beach days and regional holidays.

Free weekend public transport will continue across Victoria until 1 February 2026.
