Frisbees to fly on the Surf Coast
ACROSS two days of action at Torquay’s Banyul-Warri Fields, the Victorian Mixed Ultimate Championships will land on the Surf Coast.
Held from September 14 to September 15, the event is the state’s premier mixed gender free tournament.
Ultimate is played using a frisbee and is a combination of netball, touch football and grid-iron all rolled into an athletic sport.
The mixed gendered event will see males and females take the field in the same team and serves as a qualifying event for the National Championships in Newcastle.
Ultimate Victoria general manager Simon Talbot said the championship was their first big event leading into the summer and everybody was coming out of winter ready to play.
“We’re expecting about 350 players this year from all over Victoria and some from South Australia as well.”
More than 20 teams will make up the competition, with some aiming for the national championships and others who are there just to compete.
“We’ve got a few first-time teams, so they’re just looking to get experience and be a part of it and see what they can do in the future.”
Mr Talbot said he was looking forward to everyone getting out and enjoying the competition.
“We like to turn these into world destination events, so we hold them in places where it’s nice to get away for the weekend.
“Surf Coast Events have been a great supporter of the event over the years, as well as the Torquay community, local businesses are very appreciative of our players coming in.
“Lots of people like to come and watch the games for free so we like coming down here.”
Multiple games will run across the two days with matches kicking off at 9am through to 4pm.
Mr Talbot encourages people to head down to the Banyul-Warri Field and watch with the grand final match, which will start at 2.30pm on September.
