G21 forum to discuss the Geelong region’s biggest issues

THE big issues and questions about the Geelong region will come into focus again at this year’s G21 Annual Regional Forum, which will take place in a fortnight’s time.

To be held again at RACV Torquay Resort, the event gathers of some of the most influential business and community leaders from G21’s member councils each year, as well as leaders from state and federal politics.

The forum regularly sells out and typically draws a crowd of close to 300 people, and will be hosted this year by respected ABC journalist Ali Moore.

This year’s forum will celebrate the powerful work of First Nations people across our communities and shine a light on priorities for the region by 2050.

“Our region is home to a growing number of impressive, emerging First Nations leaders who bring fresh thinking to decision-making as they shape education, health, job opportunities and Care for Country for the next generations in our special part of the world,” G21 chief executive officer Giulia Baggio said.

G21’s First Nations pillar members, who formed as a group 12 months ago, will share their thoughts and aspirations for a thriving region. The session will be hosted by Pillar Chair Adnyamathanha woman Marsha Uppill, and panellists will include Djap Wurrung/Gunditjmara woman and Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority chief executive officer Jodie Sizer.

The forum will also feature Victoria’s Regional Development Minister Harriet Shing and eminent infrastructure expert Dr Allison Stewart from Infrastructure Victoria, as the event examines the region’s twin challenges of housing and transport.

Two of the region’s key transport leaders, Tony Brun from Avalon Airport and Matt McDonald from SeaRoad Ferries will be on hand to provide their views of what is working and where the travel links fall short.

Attendees will also be hearing from the Commonwealth Games team about the latest preparations for Victoria 2026, and Barwon Water will present its award winning G21 waste recycling project.

“The G21 Annual Forum is the region’s most important networking event of the year for the Geelong region,” Ms Baggio said.

“Whether you are a community member, a business or a government organisation, bring you questions and opinions for a day of debate, discussion and insight.

“Collaboration is the superpower of our region and your voice matters.”

The G21 Annual Regional Forum will be held at RACV Torquay Resort on July 28 from 8.45am-3pm.

The event includes morning tea, lunch and post-forum drinks and canapes.
