GAWS providing free cat desexing, microchipping
The “Fix a Feline Friend for Free” program is for 120 eligible pet cats until July 31.
GAWS chief executive officer Helen Cocks said it was part of the society’s commitment to provide services that enable responsible animal ownership and improve the wellbeing of both people and their pet companions.
“This initiative will help those who would like to desex their cat but are not in the financial position to do so.
“It will improve the health and wellbeing of the cat, reduce the number of unwanted cat pregnancies and reduce pressure on already crowded animal shelters.”
Cat owners can apply for a GAWS free cat desexing voucher through the National Desexing Network, a nationwide referral system for discounted desexing for pet owners in financial need.

Vouchers are available to applicants over the age of 18 who reside in the City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula, Golden Plains or Queenscliff shires and hold a valid Centrelink pension or concession card.
GAWS head veterinarian Dr Ruth Dover said the most well-known benefit of desexing a pet cat was to prevent unwanted litters, but the many additional health benefits might be a surprise to cat owners.
“Desexed cats often live longer, healthier lives because they are less prone to certain health issues and behaviours that can put them at risk.
“Desexing your cat can lower the risk of some infections and cancers. Cats who are desexed are less likely to engage in aggressive behaviour. It can reduce spraying, yowling, excessive grooming and roaming.
“Generally, desexed cats are more content and relaxed.”
Last year, almost 2,000 cats came into GAWS’ care.
People who meet the eligibility criteria can phone the National Desexing Network on 1300 368 992 to apply for a voucher.
