Geelong and Anglesea make tidy town and city finals
ANGLESEA and Geelong have been named as finalists for this year’s Keep Australia Beautiful competition for Victoria.
Anglesea has been shortlisted for the Tidy Towns category based on its resale shed that diverts thousands of tonnes of re-usable products from landfill and Geelong is in contention for the Sustainable Cities award for its work revitalising the Sparrovale wetlands.
The Anglesea Community House run tip shop also took first place at the 2022 Premier’s Sustainability Awards last month in the Waste and Litter reduction category, and has also now been nominated for the Banksia Foundation sustainability award.
“I think it really fits in with the culture of Anglesea, you look into the work of the rubbish rangers and others like them, everyone is really proud of their town,” operations manager with the community house Julie Martin said.
“It’s really positive, but its putting Anglesea on the map for something other than being a tourist town, it just shows the pride within the town itself.”
Geelong is up against the City of Yarra and Melbourne in the Sustainable Cities division and Anglesea will battle it out with Warrnambool and Euroa for the Tidy Town crown.
Winners are set to be announced in the coming weeks and those that poll first will then go into contention for Keep Australia Beautiful’s national competition.
