AS WINTER takes full effect across the region the animals in care at the Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) are also feeling the cold.

The organisation has put the call out to the local community for some large, thick and durable blankets that are ideally made from fleece, wool or heavy cotton to help keep their animals warm and cosy.

GAWS chief executive officer Helen Cocks said the materials provide warmth and comfort without easily tearing or fraying.

“The donated blankets are used to line our cat pens and beds to keep our animals warm and comfortable, especially during cold nights,” Ms Cocks said.

“They also help provide a sense of security and familiarity for animals who may be anxious or adjusting to the shelter environment.”

As a not-for-profit organisation, GAWS relies heavily on the community for support in delivering their work to rehome animals who have been found or surrendered.

Ms Cocks said a warm blanket can make the world of difference for the animals.

“It helps our animals stay warm, reduces stress, and offers a bit of comfort in what can be an unfamiliar environment.

“For many, it’s the first soft, warm place they’ve had in a while, and it shows in their calmer, more relaxed behaviour.”

To get involved, people can donate their blankets to the shelter, organise a blanket drive through their workplace or school, spread the word or help with monetary donations.

Due to safety concerns, people are asked not to donate electric blankets, weighted blankets, sheets, pillows or doonas filled with stuffing.

Drop-offs can be made at the GAWS shelter at 321-325 Portarlington Highway, Moolap between 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm on Saturdays and 1pm until 4pm on Sundays.
