Geelong Chamber buys building for new HQ

THE Geelong Chamber of Commerce (GCC) has bought 151 Mercer Street in central Geelong and will make the building its new headquarters.

The purchase, announced earlier this week, follows an expression of interest process run by the City of Greater Geelong, and the GCC says the purchase reaffirms its commitment to fostering business growth and prosperity in the region.

“The purchase of 151 Mercer Street represents a significant milestone for the Geelong Chamber of Commerce,” GCC chief executive officer Jeremy Crawford said.

“This strategic investment underscores our dedication to advancing the interests of our members and contributing to the economic prosperity of Geelong.

“Our dedication to our members is unwavering and this significant step forward presents numerous opportunities for Geelong Chamber members to benefit from enhanced services and facilities.”

Plans for the building – on the edge of the city’s Wurriki Nyal Civic Precinct – include establishing a permanent GCC headquarters, office spaces for chamber staff, and a business services hub equipped with meeting rooms and event spaces.

There is also potential to introduce other initiatives and services to further support the needs of the wider business community with a focus on cultivating business and economic growth, from micro and start-up operations through to large enterprise.

GCC chair Renee Jovic welcomed the purchase.

“This property, strategically located in the heart of the Knowledge & Enterprise precinct under the Geelong Framework Plan, aligns perfectly with the prosperity and future of Geelong,” she said.

“It gives our chamber an opportunity to create an epicentre for business in Geelong, and a modern proposition that puts our member businesses and their experiences at the forefront of everything we do.”

Built in 1921, the former Richardson’s Garage at 151 Mercer Street has played a prominent role in Geelong’s architectural and cultural landscape for more than a century.

Recently awarded a local National Trust Heritage Award, the restoration of 151 Mercer Street returned the building close to its original appearance.

“The Geelong Chamber of Commerce remains committed to retaining and restoring the heritage fabric of 151 Mercer Street, ensuring that its historical significance is preserved for future generations,” Mr Crawford said.

“Guided by principles of heritage conservation, any refurbishment or alteration work will be undertaken with utmost care and respect for the building’s architectural integrity.”

Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan congratulated the GCC for its investment.

“The acquisition highlights the chamber’s confidence in our city’s centre, and deep respect for our rich heritage,” he said.

“The Chamber will be a great addition ato our Civic Precinct, creating further business and community activity in this emerging commercial area.

“They are well placed in the Civic Precinct to continue their fantastic work in supporting our business sector and the region’s economic growth.”
