Geelong Disability Expo returns

AFTER a five-year hiatus, the Geelong Disability Expo will return in 2024, and will be held today (Friday, February 23) and tomorrow (Saturday, February 24).

The free event has announced Liam Twomey, a triathlete and Paralympics hopeful, as its ambassador.

Twomey’s inspiring journey, from battling ewing sarcoma (a form of pediatric cancer) at a young age to becoming an elite athlete, motivational speaker, and advocate for people with disability, serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration.

Challenged by health difficulties at the age of seven, Twomey had his right leg amputated below the knee, and grappled with mental health and substance abuse issues.

However, after discovering elite sports, he started to believe in himself, and is now committed to spreading the message that people can achieve anything they set their minds to despite obstacles.

“I’ve faced my fair share of challenges, but sports have given me purpose and drive,” Twomey said.

“I’m honoured to be part of the Geelong Disability Expo and share my story to uplift others facing similar obstacles.”

 

Kathryn Carey, director of the Geelong Disability Expo, said supporting individuals with disabilities would create a more inclusive community.

“As someone who has dedicated the past 10 years to this cause, I am passionate about providing opportunities for people with disabilities to come together and thrive.”

With an estimated 4.4 million Australians living with disabilities, including more than 17,000 in the City of Geelong alone, the Geelong Disability Expo plays a crucial role in connecting individuals with the support and services they need.

Exhibitors at the expo will showcase a range of unique offerings, including innovative technologies and resources for accessibility.

The Geelong Disability Expo will be held at the Geelong Arena today and tomorrow from 9am-3pm.
