Geelong Supercats appoint Matthew Paton as Women’s NBL1 coach
The Geelong Supercats are extremely excited to announce the appointment of Matthew Paton to the head coaching role for the Supercats Women’s NBL1 Team in 2020.
Paton is presently the assistant coach of the women’s program at the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, where he has helped nurture and develop the future generations of Australian women’s basketball for the past three years.
Within this role, he has worked closely with Geelong’s own Agnus Emma-Nnopu, who has recently committed to Stanford University for the 2021/22 season.
Paton’s coaching journey has taken him across the globe to coach in Europe and the USA, including positions with BC Sarnen (2002), Antelope Valley College (2004) and the University of Hawaii (NCAA Div 1) women’s program for four years (2005-09).
His elite-level coaching within Australia has included a year in the NBL with the Hunter Pirates (2003) and 4 years (2013-2016) with SEABL powerhouse Mount Gambier Pioneers, which reaped four consecutive South Conference Championships and two SEABL Championships.
He has also recently served as Head Coach of the Australian Women’s 3X3 team, guiding them to two Asia Cup gold medals in 2017 and 2019.
The Geelong Supercats are confident that Paton can bring the learnings from his vast coaching experiences to their program and develop the team’s local talent to a standard that it can all be proud of over the next season and beyond.
