LOCAL basketball fans have a chance to be a part of history, with Geelong United launching its first membership options ahead of its inaugural season in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL).

The club’s Founding Memberships were officially launched during last night’s (Saturday, June 22) NBL1 fixtures against Hobart, providing two options for supporters at just $15.

Geelong United CEO Mark Neeld exclusively told the Geelong Times that joining the club through its Founding Memberships provides a variety of benefits during the 2024/25 season and beyond.

“Our message to our fans is to be part of history,” Neeld said.

“The history we are talking about here is we are doing this as a basketball community, to highlight women’s participation in sport and to increase women’s participation in sport.

“We would like to activate the entire Geelong community to get behind that, and for us to do that, a number of things need to fall into place.

“First, we need 30,000 people to pay $15 to be a Founding Member of our new WNBL team.”

Obtaining a membership ensures new members will receive access to member-exclusive merchandise, season membership communications and member-exclusive offers.

Supporters can either pay for a one-time only membership or a subscription-based membership that automatically renews each year.

Neeld said the acquisition of head coach Chris Lucas and three players since Geelong United’s official WNBL entry announcement on May 10 had been an exciting period for the club.

Jaz Shelley and Keely Froling were announced as signings during the past month, with NBL1 captain Sarah Elsworthy officially unveiled as the third player to fill the inaugural roster last night.

“It’s not very often you go into a sporting competition with no coach, no players, no partners and no members,” Neeld said.

“With the competition starting in October, announcing these signings has been a really exciting time and it’s been a wonderful thing to be a part of.”

Founding Memberships do not guarantee game day tickets or stadium seating.
