Geelong’s mega sporting weekend arrives

THE Southern Hemisphere’s biggest sailing regatta, the Festival of Sails, gets under way this morning (Friday, January 26), kicking off a hug weekend of sport in the Greater Geelong region.

More than 100,000 people are slated to descend on the Geelong waterfront for the event, providing a huge cash injection to the local economy and furthering the area’s strong reputation for premium sporting events.

The 181st running of the Passage Race from Melbourne to Geelong opened the Festival of Sails regatta early this morning.

Today’s entertainment will also include a flyover by the heritage RAAF 100 Squadron at 1pm, followed by the annual Festival of Sails Fireworks at 9.30pm.

Festival of Sails chair Paul Buchholz said excitement had reached fever pitch for the premium sailing event.

“Sailors from all over Australia really love this event,” he said.

“Today’s opening Passage Race from Melbourne to Geelong is really something to see as almost 300 boats of all shapes and sizes battle it out for line and class honours to mark the start of this amazing regatta.

“And this year, for the first time in a long time, we’ve also reintroduced a Mornington to Geelong Passage Race as well and there’s a real buzz around that.”

Outside the “fast and furious sailing”, Mr Buchholz said the Festival of Sails has a “hard-won reputation” for its great entertainment and party atmosphere.

“This year is no different.

“The lineup of performances over the weekend is terrific and I reckon there’s something it in for everyone.”

Event entertainment highlights include rock band Body Type, ARIA winners Southern Sons, the Australian INXS Show, alongside new and emerging artists, family favourites the Mik Maks and the Royal Australian Navy Band.

A series of sailing presentations, family friendly activities and sailing opportunities will also feature over the weekend.
