Giant Christmas tree floats again
IT’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas on the Geelong waterfront, with the city’s giant floating tree towed into position on Monday morning.
The tree is now in its customary position next to the carousel ahead of tomorrow’s (Friday) tree lighting ceremony, which is expected to draw a big crowd to witness a big line-up of entertainment and a fireworks display.
It all starts at 7pm with the Mik Maks, the Itchy Feet band, the cast of Medimime’s production of The Grinch and the Piano Bar.
The night will be hosted by Bay FM’s Hayden and Milly with a guest appearance from Santa.
There will also be face painting, roving baubles and Central Geelong Marketing Christmas elves.
Then as darkness starts to fall, one lucky local child – chosen through a colouring competition – will have the honour of flicking the switch to begin the colourful lighting and fireworks display at 9pm.
The festive atmosphere will continue as a marching band leads the crowd on a short walk past the glow of the catenary star and lights on the corner of Moorabool and Malop streets, and on to City Hall to see the new light projection show.
“The lighting of Geelong’s floating Christmas tree has become a great local tradition,” City of Greater Geelong director of investment and attraction Brett Luxford said.
“When the tree lights up the bay and the fireworks start, it’s absolutely spectacular. Plus there’s always a great vibe there with everyone getting into the festive spirit.”
