Giving Tree Appeal to spread Christmas cheer
CHEER GEELONG is among a number of local businesses getting behind this year’s Geelong Giving Tree Appeal.
Launching tomorrow, November 11, the annual Meli and The Sexual Assault & Family Violence Centre (The SAFV Centre) appeal calls on the Geelong community to share kindness and donate to help those who need it most.
Cheer Geelong was one of the top fundraisers of the initiative in 2022, helping to raise more than $1,000 by asking cheer families to pay it forward to the appeal rather than giving teachers end-of-year gifts.
Program coordinator Erin Cowling, who is a foster carer with Meli, said a number of students at Cheer Geelong had personally received support from Meli to attend cheer programs.
“We were noticing how much Meli was doing for kids in our community, especially by supporting them to take part in youth sports, so we wanted to then give back to them by donating to the Geelong Giving Tree Appeal.”
Meli chief executive officer, Grant Boyd encouraged community members to consider even a small donation to help give a helping hand to those in need.
“While the festive season is a time for joy and celebration, the cost-of-living crisis is making it particularly tough for many in our community.
“We know our most vulnerable will again feel the strain. Your generosity may help a family be able to share a Christmas meal or afford a special present from the Santa list.
“These small acts of kindness make for a brighter Christmas for all.”
The SAFV Centre chief executive officer, Helen Bolton said every child deserved to experience the joy of Christmas.
“Through donations to the Geelong Giving Tree Appeal, you can provide a gift that conveys inclusion and belonging.
“We are truly grateful for the generosity of the community who have helped us support a significant number of people over the past few years.
“Together, we can make a significant impact to someone who has experienced trauma.”
Last year, the Geelong Giving Tree Appeal supported more than 3,200 families and individuals across Greater Geelong to enjoy Christmas Day through the distribution of e-gift cards.
The Geelong Giving Tree Appeal runs from November 11 to December 9.
