There goes Aunty Pauline

December 21, 2017 BY

WHEN Marissa Mahon took to Facebook to talk about her Aunty Pauline from Ireland, she didn’t expect to receive the overwhelming support and words of welcome that were posted.

Posting to the Surf Coast Community Noticeboard with a photo, Marissa introduced her aunt and asked locals if they saw her out riding to give her a wave or “guard the bike with your life”.

“I initially posted so people would look out for her and her bike. She was a little nervous about riding around town in case she fell, or in case someone stole the bike,” Marissa said.

“The response has been nothing short of amazing. Every day she is stopped and chatted to. She has received numerous compliments on her bike also, which just delights her.

“Along with the chats, people constantly wave and toot their horn as they go past.

“She has never been happier. She doesn’t drive, so she loves her new found freedom and independence. As a youngster she loved riding, so it’s been so lovely for her to be able to enjoy this fabulous activity again.”

Aunty Pauline will be in Torquay until January 14, but is presently on a cruise for two weeks with 22 of her relations both from Australia and Ireland.

“The community has welcomed Aunty Pauline with open arms. The great thing with Aunty Pauline is that when on her bike, she is always smiling and spreading joy along the way,” Marissa said.

“So many people are talking about her and looking for her. On the Facebook post there have been comments like, ‘let’s go Aunty Pauline Spotting’, with everyone referring to her as Aunty Pauline.

“She is a part of the Tidy Town Committee in her home town of Ireland. Every day when on her bike ride, she picks up rubbish along the way. She is a gem!”

Many residents are now stopping to take photos with Aunty Pauline and posting it in the comments on the Facebook post.

The post can be found by joining the Surf Coast Community Noticeboard Facebook group and searching for Aunty Pauline.
