THE Sands Torquay has hosted another successful #DoingItForJarrod day, with the golfing day raisiing more than $18,000 for the cause.

The annual event, first held in 2019, honours the memory of Torquay golfer Jarrod Lyle and raises money for children’s cancer charity Challenge, of which Lyle was a long-time ambassador.

Former AFL player Brad Johnson tees off at the 1st hole.

Lyle died on August 8, 2018, about a week after deciding to stop treatment for cancer (the third time he had battled the disease) and enter palliative care.

Challenge and the Australian golf industry invited every golf club in Australia to take part in the inaugural #DoingItForJarrod event in 2019 – to mark one year since Lyle’s passing – and many other clubs, including The Sands Torquay, have held golf days each year since then to raise funds, which also includes sales of the distinctive yellow Leuk the Duck merchandise.

“The #DoingItForJarrod day was a huge success. We would like to thank all involved, from sponsors, players, The Sands Golf Club and to all of the volunteers who attended the day,” The Sands Torquay captain Craig Rogers and vice captain Peter Radford said.

“It was a great feeling that we could do our little bit, making life a little bit easier for the Kids and their families who are dealing with cancer.

“Jarrod led the way with his charity and support and it is with great honour that we at his home club The Sand Torquay can continue on in his name.

“The final figure raised was well past our expectations and we look forward to a bigger and better #DoingItForJarrod day next year.”

Challenge operations manager Steve Walsh said last month’s event at The Sands Torquay was “up there with one of the best golf days I have been involved with”, with the money raised to go directly into Challenge’s programs.

“Challenge aims to manage the impact of a cancer diagnosis by addressing the emotional, social and practical needs of the whole family. Our aim is to put smiles not just on the sick child but the whole family.”
