SURFING Victoria and Rip Curl have made the tough decision to cancel the Rip Curl GromSearch at Jan Juc due to the escalating COVID-19 situation nationally and locally on the Surf Coast.

The event was scheduled to be held today (Thursday, January 13) and tomorrow (Friday, January 14) in Jan Juc, after it was already postponed from September 18 and 19 last year.

It is the second of three events for the Rip Curl GromSearch 21/22 series, with event three at this point still scheduled to take place at in Newcastle on January 19.

Liam Robertson from Surfing Victoria said Surfing Victoria and Rip Curl made the difficult decision in order to avoid further spread of the virus to the competitors, families, and local residents.

“It’s a difficult decision for us,” Rip Curl team and events manager Mark Flanagan said.

“We want to run the GromSearch so kids can surf with their friends, but we’re always mindful of the health and safety of competitors and of the best approach in the communities where we run.”

Competitors will be refunded in the coming weeks, with more details to come on the National Finals.
