Spring Creek Recreation Reserve is primed for the Torquay Tigers’ first home game against Queenscliff next weekend.

The Surf Coast Shire has completely rebuilt McCartney Oval over summer, with improved drainage, irrigation and a new subsurface helping to deliver a safer and more resilient playing surface.

Final works are under way this week, including the installation of shelters, seating, bollards and goal posts.

Torquay senior men’s football coach Dom Gleeson said his side could not wait to return to their spiritual home after a pre-season on the road.

“I hadn’t heard much in the lead-up, but we’ve given the ground as much time as we can to let it knit,” he said. “We haven’t pushed it and have been training down at Horseshoe Bend Road for the past few months.

“Now that we know, we can’t wait. New ground, new facility – we aren’t going to know ourselves.

“Most teams are going to be very excited to play on our deck.”

The ground will be officially reopened on Wednesday 8 April, with the ground ready for Torquay’s senior training the following night.
