GURU SHEDS LIGHT ON LIFE, LOVE AND CHAI
Award-winning production the Guru of Chai is heading to the Geelong Performing Arts Centre on July 31.
Created by New Zealand’s Indian Ink Theatre Company, the one-man show will grace Geelong audiences as part of the 2019 Deakin University Theatre Season.
Described as “outrageously funny” yet “heartbreakingly beautiful”, the Guru of Chai – written by Jacob Rajan and Justin Lewis – juxtaposes a classic Indian fairytale with modern-day challenges in a must-see display of storytelling.
Rajan plays Kutisar, a buck-toothed poor chai-wallah (teamaker) with little money but an infectious charisma.
Kutisar’s life is changed forever when a young girl whose been abandoned at a busy railway station begins singing and attracts a crowd.
Geelong Performing Arts Centre chief executive officer Joel McGuinness said he was thrilled to be bringing the international production to Geelong audiences.
“The show promises to be great entertainment as well as thoughtprovoking – it’s been praised around the world as nothing short of genius, amazing and mesmerising. We can’t wait for you to see it,” he said.
The Guru of Chai is strengthened by a live soundtrack from award-winning multi-instrumentalist Adam Ogle who plays the banjo, drum machine and even a plastic bag.
