Hawks enjoying break after surviving last kick of game
COACH Ben Carmichael’s heart was in his mouth when a deliberate out-of-bounds call went against Drysdale in the final minute of its nail-biter against Newcomb last weekend.
He’d already had to endure six-point and one-point losses to Anglesea and Queenscliff respectively in the early rounds of the BFL seniors season.
“(Newcomb’s) Jack Duke had a shot from probably about 45 metres out, hard up on the boundary,” Carmichael said.
“He’s a left-footer and he kicked it and it looked like it was going through for a goal but the ball was hit back in and they didn’t score at all.”
A ball-up followed and the siren went, ending the game.

The Hawks beat the Power 11.12 (78) to 11.11 (77) at home after trailing by 36 points at quarter-time and 17 at the final change.
Carmichael praised his team’s character and said the Hawks scored more freely when they became more aggressive with their ball use.
The coach lauded Jack Jenkins for keeping the dangerous Duke to two goals and renowned forward Tom Ruggles for going to the back line and displaying desperation to win the footy.
Meanwhile, usual half-back Lauchlan Dalgleish was thrown forward to great effect, kicking four majors.
Youngster Ricky Reid, who kicked two goals, injured his hamstring and is likely to miss a fortnight of footy.
The fourth-placed Hawks will welcome reigning premier Torquay in round 7 at 2.10pm on May 24, following the league bye.
