A NEW era has begun at the Torquay Tigers Football Club with a new president, a new committee, and a new excitement at Spring Creek Reserve.

Following the departure of Jenny Wood from the Tigers’ leading post, former vice-president and long-time Torquay stalwart Cameron Healy is taking over the position with the aim of stabilising the club after a tumultuous three-year period.

“We came out of two really rough years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then dealt with kind of a bounce back year if you like in 2022,” Mr Healy said.

“I think it’s really important that we really focus on and continue to circle back to the fact that Torquay is a community club, a not-for-profit club and we need people to contribute.

“All of our work runs on the back of volunteers, and I appreciate that life has changed, and that our economic position has shifted, but too few do too much in my opinion and I really need all the mums, all the dads, all the players who are part of this great Torquay community to keep contributing back to local sport.”

In addition to Healy taking up the position of president, local finance services firm UFinancial has jumped on board as the club’s primary sponsor for the Torquay junior program.

Healy has been on Torquay’s committee for the past eight years, serving three years as a general committee member before acting as Jenny Wood’s right hand for the following five years.

He also moved to Torquay 13 years ago with his wife Cassie and has engrained himself in the community of the Torquay Football Club ever since.

“We will look to really enhance our junior programs for our boys and girls teams and giving as many kids as possible the chance to play the best footy they can,” he added.

“We really try to push our juniors to not only become great players, but also to become great people, and understand the importance of volunteering.

“It will continue to act as a catalyst for the club moving forward, hopefully for the next 10 to 15 years.”

Joining Healy at the helm of the Tigers is vice-president Tim Carson, secretary Melissa Pitt and treasurer Kieran Liston.

Committee members for 2023 include Jenny Bennett, Luke Cormack, Simone Gray, Luke Hayward, Vikki McCoy, John McCoy, Marty Lanyon, Conn Mios, Mandy Patton, and Rohan Pertzel.
