THE long-awaited third green at Torquay Bowls Club will get a major boost if Labor wins next week’s state election, with Labor candidate for Polwarth Hutch Hussein pledging $40,000 for planning works.

Torquay Bowls Club is one of Victoria’s most popular bowls clubs and was named club of the year by Bowls Australia in 2017,and has been lobbying for years for help to add a third green at its home in Taylor Park.

Ms Hussein visited the club on Saturday to make the election commitment in front of a big crowd of members, and said a third green would allow Torquay Bowls Club to accommodate more members, games and events for the growing local community.

“Sport is such a big part of our community and our local bowls club is one of the best in the state, that’s why we’ll back Torquay Bowls Club to plan the upgrades it needs to keep locals active and engaged,” she said.

“Only Labor understands that local sporting clubs are at the heart of communities, that’s why we’ve backed community sport across the state – keeping locals active while delivering pathways for the next generation of sporting greats.”

Labor says it has invested more than $1.6 billion to upgrade and improve recreation reserves and sports grounds across Victoria, including better playing surfaces, new scoreboards, lighting upgrades and changing facilities.

Last week, Ms Hussein also met with members of Southern Otway Landcare Network to announce a re-elected Andrews Government would help them keep protecting the biodiversity and the promotion of sustainable land management across the Otways.

Ms Hussein said her $50,000 commitment would support the grassroots community program to look after the environment and help Victorians learn more about biodiversity and protecting the state’s native plants, insects and wildlife.

“Everyone knows how vital it is to look after and protect our Otways – this grant demonstrates our support to the Southern Otway Landcare Network and their team.”

“Only Labor will support the grassroot community groups that are working hard to protect our environment.”

Labor says it is is investing more to protect plants and animals than any government in Victoria’s history, with its long-term plan, Protecting Victoria’s Environment Biodiversity 2037, being delivered with more than $560 million of funding.
