Hutch Hussein recognised as Local Legend
TORQUAY resident Hutch Hussein’s contributions to inclusion and diversity have been recognised with Surf Coast Shire Local Legend status.
The award recognises Ms Hussein’s devotion to inclusion, respect and social justice over an extended period.
A former Victorian Labor Party president, Ms Hussein has served in a volunteer leadership capacity for the Surf Coast Reconciliation Group and is also the founder of the Surf Coast Rainbow Families group.
She is also a board member of Dyslexia Support Victoria and provides ongoing mentorship to young women interested in politics.
Ms Hussein said the rewards from helping people to be and feel included were immeasurable.
“It is really important that everyone feels a sense of belonging in our society, and it doesn’t cost anything to make people feel included.
“It doesn’t take away anyone else’s rights. It doesn’t impact anyone else for others to feel included and respected in our community.”
The Torquay resident said inclusion and social justice have been central passions for her since a young age.
“I’m someone who cares about the community they live in and seeks to leave the world a better place for the next generation,” she said.
“To me it’s not about complaining about things you don’t like in the community, but actually putting your hand up and trying to partner with others to achieve a solution.”
Ms Hussein said many hands always make light work in the volunteering space.
“We should all make the effort to make sure that we are doing our bit, and collectively that can take many shapes and forms.
“All those little bits collectively have a big impact.”
