Inclusive playspace gets the go ahead for Rippleside

THE City of Greater Geelong has partnered with an Australian children’s charity to deliver a “world class” playground at Rippleside Park.

Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood met with representatives from Variety at the site last week to formalise the commitment, with an all-inclusive playground expected to begin construction in the 2020-21 financial year.

The initiative is part of the city’s “clever and creative” vision and will combine innovative design with specialised engineering to create a space that children of all abilities can enjoy.

“We aim to be a city that is inclusive and welcoming of everyone,” Cr Harwood said.

“It is a project we have been working to make a reality for some time and I’m excited to see us come up with a playspace that is truly innovative and world class. Once finished, it will have a huge positive impact on the lives of Geelong children, families and our whole community.”

Geelong residents will be offered the chance to provide ideas and suggestions for the new facility through a public consultation opportunity once a project designer has been appointed.

As part of the partnership, Variety has committed to working with Geelong businesses and individuals to garner financial support.

Cr Harwood said the current playground at Rippleside Park opened in 2001 and was made possible thanks to time and money donated by about 1,500 generous locals.

“This redevelopment will give us an opportunity to show our sense of community spirit and togetherness once again, and to create something genuinely special.”

Variety chief executive officer David Sexton said the organisation believes all kids deserve a “fair go” and was proud to team with COGG.

“Kids of all abilities should be able to experience the joy and benefits of playing together, and Variety is proud to partner with Greater Geelong Council on this very important project for the Geelong community.”
