India Robinson tries for extra Olympics spot
JAN JUC surfing star India Robinson has been announced as part of the 2022 Irukandjis squad, which will travel to the ISA World Surfing Games hoping to clinch another spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Late last week, Surfing Australia announced a six-person squad for the ISA Games in California, headlined by World Surf League (WSL) star Sally Fitzgibbons and Championship Tour surfers Callum Robson and Jackson Baker.
The ISA World Surfing Games is a key qualification process that will provide a pathway for surfers hoping to reach their Olympic dreams in Paris.
Only two men and two women will qualify for the Australian national team for Paris, but the winning teams at the World Surfing Games in 2022 and 2024 will now be given the opportunity to earn additional Olympic slots on top of the previously announced limit.
Robinson will be hoping to clinch one of the extra spots on the Australian team after falling narrowly short of requalifying in the 2022-23 World Championship Tour.
In her first year in the top tier, Robinson secured two quarter-final finishes – one at Hawaii’s Sunset Beach and another in Portugal – but fell just short against Steph Gilmore in the third round at Margaret River to miss the mid-season WSL cut.
The ISA World Surfing Games begin tomorrow (Friday, September 16).
