Ivy happily braves new look for charity
IVY Flannery may only be 11 years old but she is already thinking of ways she can help others.
The Torquay College pupil will shave her head for the World’s Greatest Shave this Sunday, March 14 in a bid to raise money for those battling leukaemia.
“I am quite excited and nervous because I don’t know how my head shape will turn out, I might look like an egg,” she said.
The ambitious youngster set out with the goal to raise $200 before exceeding her own expectations in as little as one day.
“I have raised $453.80,” she said. “My goal was $200 but we have already gone overboard.”
Ivy said she had received mixed reviews from friends on whether she should shave her hair, but the strong-willed student is adamant about doing it.
“She spoke to me last year about it, but we left it for a year, and she came back to us again and said, ‘I would really like to shave my head”, her father Simon said. “I had more time to give her a hand with it this year, but she has signed up herself and has been shaking a can asking people to sponsor her.”
Mr Flannery is impressed by his young daughter’s determination to help others.
“She has a few kids at school who are doing it too, which is really good,” he said.
“At that age to be able to look out for other people – whether you raise a lot or a little, is great and shows a level of empathy.”
