Jan Juc Golf Classic raises $18,000
THE Jan Juc SLSC Muirfield Financial Golf Classic has raised $18,000 to go towards developing the surf club and its programs.
Held on January 5, the 27th edition of the popular golf classic saw 124 participants take part, with 32 teams playing off for bragging rights at the Torquay Golf Club.
Event organiser Jeremy Bond (son of event founder Bill Bond) said he was thrilled with the overall turnout of the event, with both competitors and the sun putting on a clinic.
“This year was really good, we raised close to $20,000, which is amazing,” Mr Bond said.
“We’ve been a bit restricted the last few years with fundraising, but this year was great, if we usually get between $15,000 and $20,000, then that’s a really strong effort. “For our event to still be running after 27 years is special, there isn’t many golf events like that still going. “Every year we always have a waiting list to play, so it’s pretty popular.
“Everyone was very generous on the day with their time, product and their funds.”
Mr Bond said the event could not have happened without the amazing work of local sponsors including the naming rights sponsor Muirfield Financial Services and Golf Imports who donated many of the prizes on the day.
Off the golf course, attendees were also treated to a guest speaking performance by Olympic swimmer Peter Doak.
Led by event royalty in Mel Freake, the team of Josh, Michael, Cameron and Mel Freake took out the overall golfing title on the day.
Finishing in last place and winning the annual “NAGA” award was the team of club president Brett Thompson, vice-president Peter Smith, Steve Jewson and Wes McDonald.
Jan Juc SLSC organisers expressed their gratitude to the greater community and event volunteers and said they looked forward to running the event successfully again in 2024.
