WHEN John Bell was installed as the Torquay Lions Club’s new president for 2019-2020, he warned the Lions they would be expected to perform well during the year.

“We have had a busy couple of years,” Mr Bell said. “But there will be no rest for members as we continue to support our community and individuals whenever and wherever help is needed.

“Fundraising will remain a big part of our year’s activities, so the famous Lions’ sausage sizzles, the ever-ready Lion Train, raffles and working bees, remain on our agenda as might one or two new projects.”

Mr Bell was speaking after the annual changeover dinner of the Torquay Lions, held at the Lions Village last week, when his new executive team was installed for the next 12 months.

Torquay Lions’ past president Tricia Blane is now zone chair and formally installed the team at the changeover dinner.

Ms Blane was proud to announce at the dinner that the Torquay Lions had distributed just over $52,000 to local, national and international causes during the past year.

“Lions worked hard to raise those funds for distribution,” she said.

“More importantly, however, the money raised from the community all went back to various communities in one form or another.”

Mr Bell told his new executive team that their year’s activities had begun already, and they would gather quickly to cross-pollinate any new ideas to ensure another successful year.

Lions in the executive team supporting the President this year are first vice president Bill Ferguson, vice president Neil Roche, secretary Ken Farrow, and treasurer Harvey Price.

“Like many other service organisations, Torquay Lions are an aging group, and although we have a few younger members, we need more people between 25 and 60 to try out their hand serving the community,” Mr Bell said.

“Most people who try out working with Lions, join us for the satisfaction they receive serving others.”
