THE culmination of 60 years of cherised memories, the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) and its members will come together to toast a monumental anniversary.

Set to be held on April 29, the Sunset Soiree event will help to celebrate 60 years of the surf club’s commitment to the community, with locals set to take tours of the new surf club and hear all the trials and tribulations that have formed it into the community service giant it is today.

Kicking off in 1963, the Jan Juc SLSC was formed after an unfortunate drowning at what was known as “Fossil Beach” (now Jan Juc).

As a response to the event, committee and rescue arrangements were formed, and with lots of energy and skills in revenue, a lifesaving club was formed and the first annual general meeting was held in August of that year.

Now, Jan Juc has become one of the strongest clubs in the state, providing its members with an inclusive, welcoming and family oriented club that supports and nurtures participation.

Jan Juc SLSC president Brett Thompson said it was an incredible feat to get to 60 years and one that they will celebrate with all the people that have shaped its history.

“60 years is pretty important… we will have a sunset soiree type of event to toast the occasion.

“We plan to have some of our life members running some club tours to kick off the day and then the bar will be open and we will have some finger food into the afternoon.

“It’ll be pretty simple, but making it so everyone can swing in and swing out.”

Jan Juc SLSC expanded from patrolling the beach to competing in surf boats and surf life-saving disciplines.

Thompson shared that the club has come a long way since its inception, but the spirit and camaraderie of the club remains the same as when it started in 1963.

“We are trying to not only celebrate all the amazing things that happened in the ’60s and ’70s but all the terrific achievements of the ’90s and 2000s,” Thompson said.

“We want to bring in celebrating this new era… it’s a pretty good history for our club with the Nippers booming and the extensions and development of the club.”

Thompson said he hoped the surf club remained for at least another 60 years so it could continue to provide a safe, healthy environment member young and old.

Tickets to the Sunset Soiree 60-year anniversary celebrations are $10 each per adult (children U12 are free).

As part of the club’s 60th celebrations, the club is seeking images from the past 60 years to add to their digital collection.

To add to the collection images, email [email protected], adding the year (or decade) of the photo in the subject line and providing details of the image.
