AGRICULTURAL scientist Kate Lockhart has been selected as the Voices of Corangamite candidate for Corangamite.
Ms Lockhart, who has lived on the Bellarine for almost 20 years, said she was committed to advocating for local issues, including cost-of-living relief, secure housing, and better infrastructure.
“I will fight for real cost-of-living relief and make secure housing a priority. My pledge to voters is clear: I will listen, work hard, and focus on what matters most,” she said.
Ms Lockhart has worked in China, Thailand, and Europe but said she remains deeply connected to regional Australia.
She grew up working summers on her family farm in central Victoria and now balances her career with raising two daughters.
She has been involved in community groups and initiatives focused on gender equality, including leading grant applications and projects to support women and girls.
In 2023, she received the City of Greater Geelong Women in Community Life Award for Climate Action.
“The Community Independents movement is built on action – on climate, gender equity, integrity, and transparency,” Lockhart said.
These values are what I have worked for my entire life. I want to bring real, practical leadership to Corangamite that aligns with these principles.”
Ms Lockhart also highlighted the challenges of population growth in the region, particularly in relation to public transport and infrastructure.
She said her experience on school councils, in local sports clubs, and with Bellarine Landcare had shaped her approach to community service.
