CONSTRUCTION is under way on the Jan Juc Surf Lifesaving Club’s new building, but the Liberal Nationals have made an election commitment to tip in another half a million dollars.

The state Labor and federal Coalition governments have both contributed $2 million to the $5 million project, with the club itself contributing the remaining $1 million.

Demolition of the 1960s-era building began in mid-September, and construction of the new building – which will be the same height as the previous building but dug further into the ground, making it about one and a half times the size – is expected to be finished by late next year.

South Barwon MP Andrew Katos made the election pledge at the Jan Juc SLSC’s annual fundraising lunch, held earlier this month.

“Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club has made a huge contribution to participation in the local community and it’s only fair that they receive the support they deserve,” he said.

“This upgrade will continue to improve access for the club members, volunteers and the community I am beyond proud to have advocated for this result.

“As the local Member of Parliament, I am proud to be continually fighting for our grassroots clubs – and will continue to deliver for them.”

Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Brad Battin said modern facilities were vital to the training and ability of life savers to protect families at the beach.

“This announcement supports the Liberal Nationals’ plan to make Victorian beaches safer with new drone technology, improved facilities for Life Saving Victoria and respecting our local volunteers.

“Only a Matthew Guy Government will deliver the much needed facilities for our life saving volunteers and support those who protect us.”
