Kenny set to move again for Movember
A PASSION to make positive and meaningful change is guiding a Torquay local into his second consecutive Movember campaign.
Tom Kenny is moving 6km every day (180km in November) to raise funds for men’s health and suicide prevention.
The fundraising drive is one close to the 27-year-old’s heart, having personally experienced poor mental health, and having close friends touched by the same.
Mr Kenny spoke to this publication in 2023 about “stripping back his mask” (his moustache), which had typically been used as a way to divert attention away from hardships in his life.
This year, he is trying a more inclusive approach and will be encouraging a different person each day to run 6km with him and tell their story.
“It was such a success last year, and I am fired up to go around again and hope to raise $5,000,” he said.
“Last year it was a bit more self-oriented, but this year with the movement goal, I’ll be putting a big endeavour on it being a really social campaign with the community.
“I plan to hear 30 different people’s stories over the month of November, good or bad.
“Making this smaller movement goal I think will be a really inclusive way to spread the word.”
Alongside moving every day, Mr Kenny will be hosting an open mic music night in Torquay on November 17.
Headlining the event will be close friend and Australian musician Tom Harrington and Flynn Gurry.
“The music night was the most successful part of the campaign last year, and I’m sure it will be the same this year,” Mr Kenny said.
“For Tom to be holding one of his tour dates as a gig in my backyard is super-cool.
“Last year we had about 50 there, and we will aim for over 80 people.
“$5 from each ticket sale will go to Movember, along with donations on the day.”
The music event is open to the public.
