Large tree to be removed in Lorne
A TREE at high risk of stem failure will be removed in Lorne due to mounting safety concerns.
The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority will be felling the Monterey cypress tree located on Cypress Avenue in Lorne.
A professional arborist has confirmed the tree could break or fall unexpectedly at any time.
Unfortunately, there is no way to prune or treat the tree to mitigate the risk, meaning removal is the only viable option.
Removal is scheduled for mid-June 2025 and is exempt from the heritage overlay due to its high safety risk.
The tree will be mulched post-removal and be replaced by the same species of cypress.
The mulch will be repurposed locally to support weed suppression, moisture retention and soil temperature regulation.
There will be an exclusion zone around the tree and community are asked to avoid the area while work is under way.
