AN ELECTED Liberal Government would commit $2.7 million to help complete the final stage of upgrades at Anam Cara House Geelong, including eight additional end-of-life bedrooms.

The funding would support the internal fit-out of the remaining rooms at the Deakin University-based private hospital, adding two living rooms with outdoor decks, a dining area, a hydrotherapy bath and additional service areas.

Anam Cara House presently operates 12 palliative care beds, with construction of the final stage bringing the total to 20.

The project received earlier support from the former Coalition Government, including a $5 million commitment in 2016 and further funding in 2021.

However, $940,000 of the 2021 grant was later withdrawn.

Liberal candidate for Corangamite Darcy Dunstan and Victorian Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson made the election commitment at Anam Cara House Geelong earlier today (Monday, March 31).

Anam Cara House Geelong chair Diane Taylor welcomed the announcement.

“Anam Cara House Geelong is incredibly grateful to the Liberal candidate for Corangamite, Darcy Dunstan, for recognising the exceptional level of care provided by our facility, and for announcing this funding commitment to enable us to finally complete this 20-bedroom facility,” she said.

Mr Dunstan said the additional support would secure the future of the service.

“Anam Cara House Geelong, an accredited private hospital, provides crucial health care to those suffering end-of-life and life-limiting illnesses.

“This now includes local veterans. It is vital we secure the future of this essential facility.”

Senator Henderson criticised the Albanese Labor Government for not extending the timeframe needed to secure the full funding.
